At a WI Committee Meeting earlier in the year, it became clear that our Institute needed extra funds to pay for the ever increasing cost of speakers; from this the idea of a celebration for the Queen’s 80th birthday grew (she is W.I. member)… On Friday night 21st April, the rousing strains of Jerusalem, There’ll always be an England, I Vow To Thee My Country and the like were heard coming from Ashendon Village Hall. Two gentlemen stood outside enviously wanting to join in! The event saw Ashendon W.I. members in their element; working as a team we had a fun evening, with excellent cooks producing a three course meal followed by tea/coffee all for only £10 per person. A party atmosphere developed as 53 ladies (from Institutes including Broughton Pasture, Cuddington and Chearsley) sat down with tables laid, cardboard crowns to wear, balloons on the tables and bunting overhead. This happy and memorable event raised an astounding profit of £537.18 which will help towards ensuring quality speakers for the 2006/2007 programme.
