Ashendon is a village and parish, in the Union of Aylesbury, and first division of the three Hundreds of Ashendon, 7½ miles west of Aylesbury, and 2 north-east of Chilton. The church, an ancient structure, dedicated to St. Mary, in the decorated early English and perpendicular styles of architecture, consists of a nave, chancel, south aisle, and tower with 3 bells. In the church is a tomb with a figure of one of the Knights Templars, rudely ornamented with foliage, said to be that of Sir John Bugden, of Policot. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the diocese of Oxford, and gift of Christ Church College, Oxford; value, £70 per annum. The Rev. Thomas Woodward Gardner, B.A., is the incumbent, who resides at Dorton. The population, in 1851, was 290; acreage about 1,790.
